How safe are these methods for overnight, refrigerated semen shipping: "BioTranz" (see http://www.zdlinc.com/ship.html) and "Sperm Shipper" (see http://shopsite.nwcryobank.com/product21.html). By "how safe" I mean, when a woman uses the preparation for a vaginal insemination (unwashed semen), are there any risks to her? I did find research from the BioTranz company's own Dr. Zavos ("Sperm viability in human semen specimens cryostored at 5C using the Bio-Trans container system..."), but I'd like to see research done by an impartial entity, or at least that is more recent. If this isn't available, I'd also be open to finding a doctor who is not connected to these companies who would converse with me on the subject either by phone or email. | |

There's a risk that the donor will claim visiting rights. |

Let me clarify that I mean MEDICAL risks. We are well informed about the parenting issues and have that worked out. Thanks for the comment. |

Greetings, I realize that this is a very serious question for you, and I am not trying to be funny. What does overnight shipping cost, and if the risks are related to the freezing, isn't it easier to "ship" the donor - or yourself? Not for to meet, of course. |

Myoarin, Not a silly question at all. We've considered it, but it does cost more to fly across the country than to use one of these kits (around $200). If I were to fly, I'd have to get a last-minute ticket (you must time your insemination with your ovulation precisely and you can't predict it much ahead of time) plus miss 2-3 days of work without much notice (very difficult in my job), plus I'd be away from my young daughter. Multiply that by possibly many months of trying before getting pregnant. The donor is a medical intern and is totally unable to travel spur (sperm) of the moment. So, you see why the overnight mailing would be handy. I don't believe there are big risks to using this method, but I'd like to see an impartial study. |
