If someone has told you that drinking alkalized water is good for you or for some condition (e.g., preventing bone loss, as I once heard) they are trying to sell you something. Although technically true that a higher pH is more likely to prevent dissociation of hydroxyapatite which your bones are made of, it is practically useless because your body tightly regulates pH. If you have a pH outside the range of 7.35-7.45 (which is alreadt alkalized) you will die or be in very serious condition. If you drank alkalized water, you will raise your pH for about 30 seconds after absorption, but your body would compensate within one to two breaths (by retaining CO2, which converts to HCO3- and H+ in water). I couldn't find any research on this on the pubmed database, probably because you'd have to be a fool to conduct such research. |

There are internet references for scientific research which documents the benefits and uses of alkaline drinking water. For a comprehensive listing, go here: http://www.waterionizer.org/site/898596/page/443004 In regard to the comments made to the effect that it does no good to attempt to influence the pH of the body because the body automatically corrects pH: this does not take into consideration the effects on the body of having to continually make such correction. This is a common fallacy and more can be learned about how alkaline balance actually works by going here: http://www.waterionizer.org/site/898596/page/453428 and here: http://www.waterionizer.org/site/898596/page/452400. I hope this is of value |
