Estimates being, well, estimates, please keep in mind that the numbers
I?m about to give you are worth exactly the value of the bandwidth
they are printed on. Sales estimates vary greatly from analyst to
analyst, and they can?t even agree on the size of the installed base
of game consoles in the U.S. at the end of 2004. The estimates I read
ranged from 90 million to 125 million.

However, I managed to find some analyst estimates for sales of the six
game consoles you requested from 2004 through 2008. All numbers
represent a ?consensus? taken from two or three analyst reports, as
final sales figures for 2004 are not yet available.

Here are the numbers:

		Unit sales, in thousands

	2004	2005	2006	2007	2008

PS2	15,833	12,000	6,667	3,500	2,000
PS3 6,889	16,152	21,284
Xbox	5,667	4,900	2,003	1,033	233
Xbox2 3,250	5,511	13,000	15,682
GameCube 4,773	2,967	817	83	17
GameCube2 (Revolution)	3,167	5,500	5,200

I researched the major platforms and the major companies to answer
your question, but I didn't have much personal knowledge about gaming
consoles before this. I don't really know much about the other game
systems you mentioned. But based on what I've read, it is likely to
continue being a PlayStation and Xbox world. I like to root for the
little guys, and there are plenty of examples of little guys winning
in the technology world. But Sony and Microsoft do not play around.

"Although the market research firm found that Sony still dominates the
market with its PlayStation 2 console, which shipped its 70 millionth
unit last January, competition has been fierce."

"Microsoft?s Xbox 2 is expected to hit the market late this year with
Sony readying the PlayStation 3 by mid-2006, In-Stat/MDR also
reported. Nintendo is expected to try launching its next-generation
GameCube 2 console either before or simultaneously with Sony ? its
primary competition.

In-Stat/MDR also predicts Sony will ship the most consoles through
2008 based on its proven track record over the last 10 years and
marketing prowess, even as Microsoft and Nintendo are expected to
narrow Sony?s lead."
