I hope this helps. LSST will do a complete survey of KBOs brighter than 24th mag (of order 100 km, a sample of order 5 104 objects). But most of these will already be discovered byPanSTARRS, etc. LSST will get colors and light curves.? KBOs move 1? per hour. Thus observe a given field 1 hour to discover KBOs to 26.5 mag (with an 8-meter class incarnation). Observing the same field three times over two years yields a good orbit. ? Observing a series of fields equally spaced along the ecliptic (±20°) allows full study of the dynamical structure of theKuiper Belt. This requires that LSST be able to sample the full ecliptic plane. ? If we spend 10% of the LSST observing time on this mode, we will discover roughly 100,000 faint KBOs. http://www.lsst.org/Meetings/CommAccess/docs/strauss.pdf |
