I need to create a "drilldown" list in Excel, e.g. each customer is
listed once with their account number, but you can click on a customer
and see their order history (which has multiple columns).

This detail would have multiple columns and rows.

It has your answer.

Thank you sethcoop. Wow, when I got this "assignment" from one of our
staff I didn't know what a monster it would become. My real job is
coordinating our donor database which is xbase now, but we're in the
process of converting to SQL, so Excel really isn't my forte. The
instructions given are for Excel 2002 and 2003 (or 2003 and 2004); do
you know if this is possible with Excel 2000? Otherwise, I think
she's out of luck, as our hospital probably won't upgrade just for
this project....

Thanks again!

Without looking at the data in the sheet, I would almost say that you
could create a Pivot Table with the data. Add a new sheet to the work
book, insert a Pivot Table, for the Data Range, change to the sheet
with the data and select everything, including headers. Finish.

To see the data, add Customer Name to the left-most column. Add the
details (whatever you want to see) in the data region or as
side-columns. You can now see all details by customer as needed.
This should be available even in Excel 2000. However, it might show
more data than you want to display right away. Still, it's an easy
sort.

Similary, you could pivot all of the data into columns going across
and use Auto-Filters to limit the display to a single customer.

As a side note, you can check out either MSDE or SQL Express (SQL 2005
beta) to get an MS Database backend. MSDE will import directly into
SQL 2000, but you'll need tools. SQL Express comes with limited
tools, but is not officially due for release until end of 2005.

Good luck.
