I run Outlook 2003, and when I try to compact a data file, it doesn't.
No errors, nothing, it just acts as if there was nothing to compact
(i.e. a brief pause, then back to the previous GUI screen). Why is
that?

Have you run Detect and Repair from the help menu? How big is your PST?

Yes I ran that; the PST is 1Gb. I am sure it needs compacting, I must
have deleted about 25-50,000 emails and the size never went down.
