I'm transcribing the private notebook of Abraham Bennet FRS 1749-1799, one of the founders of Modern Electrical Theory (he invented the gold-leaf electroscope). Two sections are written in shorthand, probably the system published by John Byrom (1692-1763) in 1767 when Bennet was 18. They can be viewed on: http://www.eyemead.com/canuhelp.htm Can you help me get in contact with someone who can translate the shorthand? They may well contain some private remarks that would cast more light on Bennet's thinking as a Curate of the Church of England near the time of the French Revolution, as his curacy was a sinecure difficult to maintain as English politics began to split into two opposing camps. | |
