Would the number of windshields that are replaced every year be of any use to you?

Clarification of Question by job12345-ga on 28 Mar 2005 07:58 PST
bobbie7: That would be of interest to me. Also, if you can find it,
the number of windshields repaired each year would really comprise
most of the answer I'm looking for. (Only having the total number of
replacements each year does not accurately represent the number I'm
looking for. I'm looking for the number of windshields repaired or
replaced.) When someone replaces or repairs their windshield through
their insurance, a claim is filed. I would imagine, somewhere there
is an account for the number of windshields repaired each year and the
number of windshields replaced each year based on the claims filed
(although, that number would not account for the windshields repaired
or replaced when a customers pays with cash.) Anyway, Please let me
know. I appreciate your time spent on this question. Thanks.

NUMBER OF WINDSHIELDS THAT ARE REPLACED
=======================================

''You never know when that rock is coming," said Leo Cyr, vice
president of the National Glass Association. In 2003, Massachusetts
car owners replaced 326,000 windshields, representing 5.9 percent of
the state's 5.5 million vehicles. Nationally, 11 million windshields
are replaced annually.?

?In 2000, American companies made 5.6 million windshields with a value
of $365.5 million, while in that same year 12.6 million windshields

NUMBER OF WINDSHIELDS THAT ARE REPAIRED
=======================================

3,000,000

?American consumers and businesses saved an estimated half a billion
dollars last year by repairing, rather than replacing, damaged
windshields, according to Richard D. Inman, CEO of NOVUS Windshield
Repair. More than three million car windshields were repaired in 1995,
compared with 500,000 in 1990. This trend should continue as the
economy forces further belt-tightening among families, industries and
insurance companies.?

?Hardt reported that while 1.2 million windshields per year are
serviced nationally, the repair rate is 25 percent (three percent of
what was originally going to be repaired gets replaced). He said State
Farm's rate was 30 percent in December alone?before the rollout was
even complete. Hardt said those numbers will jump even higher after
the rollout is finished. This statement prompted technicians to ask
why then, when policyholders call, couldn't they be told that repair
was an option or of its benefits. Hardt was adamant. "We are
ultra-sensitive to any kind of steering," he said.?

Pick a number like 50 million and you will be correct by fine tuning
the definition of damage. Perhaps ten million are in significant
danger of a fine or warning reguarding the damage that their
windshield has. Neil

I was hoping insurance companies would produce some kind of statistic
based on the number of windshields their fixing and replacing. It's
possible the number I'm looking for can't be found at this time. The
type of damage I was referring to could either be rock chips, stone
damage, or cracks. It would seem like some entity out there would be
interested in finding this out, but who knows?

I suggest finding the manufacturer or supplier of windscreens and see
if they have any statistics for you, remember most windscreen damage
would not be from major accidents so even insurance companies would
not have records on them.
