What is the level of education required to teach English in China?
is it different for public and private institutions?

Yes, a TEFL qualification

That stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language

They are not hard to get - it is not brain surgery.
- also there are 'schools' dedicated to that sausage machine.

As for China, look forward to being one of three Anglos in a city of 5m.
- wherever you go, people will point at you - like a zoo exhibit

Most of schools in my city ask for a TESOL certificate, which stands
for Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is esay as
hell to get: my bf got it in 2 weeks.
There is a huge need for foreign teachers in my city (I assume that it
is the same everywhere), so as long as you are a holder of TESOL you
can always find a job in an institution. For public schools sometimes
you might need a degree of any level and any major. They just want to
show.
The only thing you have to watch out for is the spits in the street.
