I am looking for the instructions how to change the memory in my
Toshiba Satellite 4020CDT Laptop. I do not know where the memory is
located.

Howdy swavek-ga,

I think there is a possibility that you have to remove the hard drive to get
to the memory slot. If you feel comfortable doing that, you might want to
check there. Please post your results here. Thanks!

I did remove the HD but there was no any memory slots. Do you have any
documentation from Toshiba how to do it? It should be in the manual
which I don't have. Thanks.

Howdy swavek-ga,

That's the problem. The manuals for the 4020CDT only refer to the fact
that you can expand the memory, but do not tell how this is done. From
the manual:

Standard 64 MB (32MB onboard; 32MB in memory slot --- no slots free)
Maximum 160 MB (Maximum expansion requires removal of standard 32MB memory card)

Believe it or not, that pretty much sums up the manual's coverage of
memory expansion.

A search on Crucial shows that the memory module appears to be one of
"standard" laptop memory format as well, so we are looking for a slot
of a "standard" type as well.

I contacted Toshiba's technical support, and considering they probably
only have access to the same online documents as I did, they did not
know specifically how it is done either. However, they did say that
the memory module might be under the keyboard.

I have found a PDF manual file that addresses updating various other
Toshiba laptop computers, but it does not include yours. However, this
manual does give clear instructions on how to remove the keyboard and
access the memory module in two other laptops.
http://www.toshibadirect.com/content/pc/b2c/Memory_Module_10-28-04_TAIS_version.pdf

The above manual shows other laptops with the bottom memory module
access panels, but you will want to check the instructions for the
Tecra M1 and M2 for some possible hints on how to remove the keyboard
for access to the memory slot.

Here are some other instructions from Toshiba for other Satellite
models.

Kingston has some instructions for a slightly different procedure.
http://www.kingston.com/support/install/memory/Toshiba/KTT2400.PDF

Read the instructions for the T2400CS/T2400CT.

This page is for the Portege 4000, but has some good photos of one
process of removing the keyboard.

I am sorry we are limited to "shotgun" solution attempts at this point,
but this is because of Toshiba just not providing a specific solution
for your situation. Appreciate your patience with this process.

Howdy swavek-ga,

Appreciate you accepting this as an answer.

If you need Acrobat Reader to view the PDF documents referenced below,
you can download it free from the Adobe website.
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

On looking over the user's guide for your computer, the only reference
I could find about expanding the memeory was that it could be done, but
it gave no clue on how to do it. You can find the manual here.

The information provided by the Toshiba web site on memory was pretty
much just the following:

"...
Standard 64 MB (32MB onboard; 32MB in memory slot --- no slots free)
Maximum 160 MB (Maximum expansion requires removal of standard 32MB memory card)
..."

I contacted Toshiba's technical support, and considering they probably
only have access to the same online documents as I did, they did not
know specifically how this is done either. However, they did say that
the memory module might be under the keyboard.

If you want to contact Toshiba support for computers in the future, you
can call them at (800) 457-7777. Nice enough people.

The Digital-Daily web site has some great illustrated instructions for
the Portege 4000.
http://www.digital-daily.com/mobile/toshiba_portege4000/index04.htm

"Memory replacement in the Portege 4000 is a very easy procedure. There
are two memory slots for SO-DIMM PC133, one of which is taken by 128 MB.
To add one more module you have to remove the keyboard which is attached
with two screws. The screws can be found under the plastic cap with the
'i' and Power buttons."

If you need any clarification, please feel free to ask.

I believe it's on the bottom of the computer. Just flip it upside
down and look for a little lid held in by a couple of screws. The
place where you buy the memory may install it for you.

There is a lid at the bottom but it is just for the HD not memory. Is
it possible you can't upgrade/replace the memory in this laptop?
