Question ID: 499348
when starting windows the network services are active before any
antivirus and firewall softwares can protect the PC.
I think, i have got some viruses in the mean time.
do you know any solution different from plug in the network after
completion of the full XP system and protecting software (Norton
internet security).

Hello Laserjet,

Would you be willing to pay a modest fee (say $50 to $100) for such a
solution? If so, there are a number of easy to set up items (hardware
/ software) to do this.

Hello Laserjet,

I can certainly understand, but the modest cost of a firewall gives
you a number of benefits beyond the immediate fix. For example, it
also helps in setting up "defense in depth" where a number of problems
are filtered out before they get to your vunerable PC. Plus to me,
time is money and an effective fix like that is well worth it to
prevent the aggravation of infected systems.

The other suggestion I might make is what my kids follow:
 [1] Install Zone Alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/)
[2] Run a good spyware detector regularly (at Zone Labs or Spybot
Search and Destroy at http://www.safer-networking.org/)
[3] Download Firefox & use it instead of IE. My kids even add a rule
to Zone Alarm that prevents IE from any access to the Internet.
There are free versions of all of these [though paying the modest cost
of the supported versions will help them write updates].

It is true that the Windows firewall starts late with Windows XP SP1
or earlier, but if you install Service Pack 2 you should find that
Windows' own firewall will be activated easlier and should provide you
with the protection you seek.
