This guy came to look at a room that we have for rent, and he had the
most amazing haircut. Or so I thought. His head looked like he shaved
it, and then added about 18 tufts of about 50 2" long hairs. So, I did
the only natural thing when confronted by somebody with really weird
hair. I complimented him on it: "That's some awesome hair." His
response: "actually, it grows this way." So here's the question, is
there a name for when hair grows in bizarre tufts like this, and if
so, what's the name? His head was basically bald, but with tufts.
Tufts I say.

Sounds like alopecia areata, male pattern baldness. Did it look
anything like this: http://www.haarerkrankungen.de/therapie/alopeciaareata_verlauf.htm

No, it was more like tufts. In those pictures, the hair is still kind
of growing in a normal direction, and is thin at some places and
thick(er) at others. This guy had hair that was in dense tufts
sticking straight out of his head in some places, and in other places
he had complete baldness. It literally looked like he shaved his head
with a razor in about 90% of the area, and left really dense areas
sticking straight up here and there.

It was intense. Not male pattern balding unless it can take other manifestations.

Here's another picture:

Depending on hair type, the direction of the growth might just be from
him shaving his head or keeping his hair really short. I've looked
like a hedgehog after cutting my hair down to 5mm. :-)

Hmmm...no we're talking. That is starting to fit the bill. I'm going
to get consensus from my roommates on this and see what they have to
say.
