I've found references to the number one song for July 1943 and the
number one album for May 1946, but nothing that is specific to a
particular day. Would this information be useful?

I figured on narrowing it down to the week for each of those dates.
Didn't they change weekly back then like they did in later years? I
have seen lists on how many weeks particular songs were on the hit
list back then, so there must be weekly lists.

Dear kregwill,

The number one pop music single for the week from 26 June to 2 July
1943 was "Taking a Chance on Love", by Benny Goodman feat. Helen
Forrest as vocalist.

In the following week (3 July to 9 July), "Comin' in on a Wing and a
Prayer" by The Song Spinners (Decca 18553) was at the pop charts' top
position.

In the week from 18 May to 24 May 1946, "Prisoner of Love" by Perry
Como (RCA 20-1814) was the number one pop single.

The following week (25 May to 31 May), "The Gypsy" by The Ink Spots
(Decca 18817) had the number one position.

Those chart positions refer to Billboard's ""Best Selling Popular
Retail Records" charts for the respective years.
