i'm trying to use iMovie to edit some mpg movie that i took on my
camera. when i open the files in quicktime, there is sound. but when i
drop them into iMovie, there's no sound. all my settings in iMovie
seem fine. what should i do?

If the " Video Play Through Camera " is enabled  it sends all audio
through the FireWire port and mutes it on the computer. This is a
common problem with people thinking they have no audio or  an audio
issue.  Turn this off in iMovie preferences.

Alternately you can check the volume of the movie above the timeline;
many people seem to overlook this.
