In the 1970's a TV network (I believe it was CBS) did a program on "3 white cities" in the country. I know 2 of them but I can't remember the third. San Leandro, Ca. and New Caanan, Conn. are the ones I remember - can you help me with the third? A friend has tried to get the information from CBS and gets no where. Maybe you won't be able to find it if CBS has buried it. However, if you have it in your archives -- I'd love to have it. Notify me when you get to $25.00 for permission to go on, if necessary. Thanks Kathe Frates (ops6@aol.com) |

Hello. The program was called "The Suburban Wall." It was televised in early 1972. New Canaan and San Leandro were indeed two of the three cities profiled. The third city was Stoughton, Massachusetts. "The Suburban Wall" was written by Paul Altmeyer and narrated by Rod MacLeish. The program was actually produced by the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company (Group W), which later merged with CBS. The New York Times published a lengthy review of the program on February 1, 1972. You may purchase the article from their database: The New York Times: "TV: 'The Suburban Wall' Examined on Channel 13" By JOHN J. O'CONNOR. February 1, 1972, page 75. http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/nytimes/results.html?st=advanced&QryTxt=leandro+canaan+suburban&x=0&y=0&By=&Title=&datetype=6&frommonth=02&fromday=01&fromyear=1972&tomonth=02&today=01&toyear=1972&restrict=articles&sortby=REVERSE_CHRON The program won the RFK Memorial Award of television journalism in 1972. See: 'First Prize Television - Paul Altmeyer of Group W for "The Suburban Wall"' http://www.rfkmemorial.org/journ_award/69-73.htm -------- search strategy: new york times historical archive: "new canaan" "san leandro" I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, please request clarification. Thanks. | |
