I have been told also that there has been a handful of brave women

When I was in scouts back in the day, one of my leaders told his story
of a grizzly bear. The bear was declawed and muzzled and kept in a
large cage (not very humane I know, but this is the story)... The
owner of the bear let people go in to fight it for $10.

The scout leader went in and went at it with the bear but was greatly
overpowered and the bear gave him a good knocking around. I guess the
300 lb weight advantage isn't easily overcome.

Although Grizzlies might be unbearable, an adult female blackbear can
be as small as 100 lbs. That might be a closer fight even if she has
the use of her claws and teeth... although I'd feel much better about
the fight if she couldn't puncture me.

Ah sorry, I read your question too fast and thought it said "men and
women"... I hope someone quickly posts about women wrestling bears so
my bad post can get covered under layers of good info.
