Question ID: 500860
I'm a reader of www.gizmodo.com, the gadgets weblog. He updates every
day with news of new gadgets that have been just released or are in
development. He also follows technology standards as they are adopted
(or not).

Is there a similar website for mental health technology, covering
new/developing medications, treatments, and diagnostic tools?
I doubt it, but if you find one, that's the best-case-scenario answer
I'm looking for.

But let's pretend there isn't one, and let's also pretend that you or
I wanted to start one.
Can you help me find sites to check on a regular basis to keep track
of this information?

Such as...
new and current FDA approval;
pharmacology companies' medication trials;
new medication uses, contraindications, and side effects;
new and current diagnostic technologies;
new and leading edge treatment technologies - including such ideas as
neuromagnetic stimulation, SPECT imaging, new and current uses for MRI
and CAT scans, etc.

websites only - for the purposes of this question I'm not interested
in anything I can't do on the internet.

Hello Katten,

I have collected numerous sites that serve up news on the mental
health field, some better than others. Because mental health is such a
broad topic, it's unlikely you'll find one site to always cover all of
the topics in which you've expressed an interest.

At the end of my answer are a few websites that allow you to
customize the news delivered to your liking. I've also included a way
to turn this answer into a 'web page' on your own computer, making it
easy to save and link to the sites you find to meet your needs.

Findory personalizes your newsreading. The more you use it to search
mental health issues, the more it will deliver. Use this only for
mental health issues, and it will eventually only deliver mental
health issues. Use plenty of keywords to get a variety of articles.

?Findory is cool because it suggest news articles to me based on ones
I?ve already read. I?ve been reading news on it for a couple of months
now, and it?s amazing how relevant the stories are to my interests. In
fact, I started telling my husband how cool it was that there had been
so many medical breakthroughs lately, not even registering the fact
that I was just reading about more of them because Findory had figured
out that I have a weird fascination about medical research. Findory
also saves my entire history, so I can always go back and find that
article that inevitably becomes relevant to a cocktail party
conversation a week later. (social improvement note: people are really
impressed when you e-mail them articles about stuff that was casually
discussed in a drunken conversation)?

One final trick. If you have MS Word, you can copy this answer, and
paste it into Word, select ?Save As? and ?Save as a Web Page? from the
drop down menu on the Save dialog box. (Be sure to give it a name
you?ll remember and save in a location where you can easily find it)
Then, all the links will be hypertext (clickable) and you only need to
open the Word webpage and click on each link. You can add or delete
sites you don?t care for as well, making yourself a customized Mental
Health Resource page. Once you have the Word Webpage open, you can go
another step farther, and go to FILE, then SEND and click SHORTCUT TO
DESKTOP. Then you?ll have a desktop icon of your personalized Mental
Health Favorites. For free!

There you go! I hope one or more of these links will meet your needs.

Good answer to the question I asked, but I was hoping for a different answer.

I'm not interested in press releases on every little clinical trial
and published study. Much of the point of this question, I realize
now, is to find a resource where someone has filtered out all the
baby-step research we hear about every day. I'm tired of reading
headlines that say "Your diet can cure depression!" for an article
about a study where people ate fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids and
saw a 1.5% change in depressive symptoms.

I'm looking for news about what will become the next BIG steps in
mental health. MRI imaging is a good example - now we can see some of
what's going on in your head.
30 years ago, we used sedative antipsychotic medications like
Haloperidol and Thorazine. Then, there was a major breakthrough in
medication, and we started using atypical antipsychotics such as
Clozaril. It was a quantum leap in pharmacology. I'm looking to
track similar advancements - what will raise our diagnostics and
treatments by 15%, not 1.5%.

It's likely that more of a focus on hardware and technology in your
answer will help.
I am not at all interested in news about talk-therapy or counselling.
That's what I do for a living; I already know about that. Nor am I
interested in policy and law (in this question, anyway) I'm
interested in sexy science.

Let me put it this way: my clients already know that eating their
vegetables and avoiding caffeine will help them. But none of us have
any idea what's on the horizon for the next treatment breakthrough a
la atypical antipsychotics. Will it be SPECT imaging? Neuromagnetic
stimulation? Gene therapy?

Thanks - and sorry about the poorly phrased question.

Hi Katten,

I thought I understood your question fairly well as you originally
posted. (I don't think it was poorly worded ar all!) I did include
technology, etc. in my searches, I just forgot to include it in the
list of terms.

I will gladly search further, but since new technology in mental
health is not an everyday occurrence, I doubt if we'll find a site
dedicated to only that topic. I will certainly search again, and post
as soon as possible.
