How is anyone going to be able to answer this?  Who knows how many gay
men who haven't "outed" are earning millions   - or very little -  as
"straights" and would upset any statistics?

You are asking for a statistic that doesnt exist. Unfortunately the
gay and lesbian community are not counted properly in many area's.
Everything from the census to earnings. What little research or
statistics that you might learn will most likely not be accurate. Due
to many gay and lesbians living "in the closet" due to discrimination
in many facets of our lives.
Being a professional gay/lesbian member of our society, with many
friends of the same status, I can tell you that you would most likely
be amazed at a true and accurate statistic of the wealth, educational
background and actual number of gay and lesbians in society.
