Question ID: 501243
Im doing some Yellow Page advertising and I plan on putting
advertisements in telephone books for all 50 states. However to do
this I need to contact each telephone company to speak to someone in
their Yellow Page advertising department. The problem is that I don't
know which states each company covers.

For example, SBC I belive is the primary telephone provider in
Michigan and Texas. From what im told they cover 20 states, but when
I call them I can't find anyone to tell me exactly what states they
cover. The same goes for Verizon. I know they cover New York, and I
think they also cover Pensylvania, but I don't know what other states
they provide service to.

I need a list of all 50 states, and the name of the primary telephone
provider in each state.

When I mean Primary Telephone provider, im talking about the company
that physically ownes the lines in each state. An example of this
would be in Michigan SBC ownes the lines in my area. Now Granted a
company such as Talk America also serves my area, but they simply
lease the lines and do not put out an actual yellow page phone
directory.

Heres how I would like the Information....

Michigan------------- SBC--------- http://www.sbc.com
New York--------------Verizon----- http://www.verizon.com

From there I can look up the numbers and start planning my advertising.

Thank You

Hi Metro25,

The following is the result of my research for primary telephone
companies in the United States:

?...The Modification of Final Judgment, or MFJ, created a new world.
Beginning in 1984, it broke up AT&T into a new smaller AT&T, which was
to provide long distance service in competition with other companies,
and seven regional Bell operating companies ("RBOCs") - Ameritech,
Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Nynex, Pacific Telesis, Southwestern Bell
(now known as SBC Communications), and US West. There was also one
preexisting independent phone company, GTE Corporation, which was of a
comparable size. These seven regional RBOCs and GTE were to provide
local service where AT&T had previously been doing so. (Subsequent
mergers have reduced these companies to four: SBC Communications,
BellSouth, Verizon, and Qwest.)?

An excellent source of information which includes the following:

The seven RBOCs were granted the right to:

*Provide local service
*Publish Yellow Pages directories
*Provide Directory Assistance services
*Use the Bell symbol
*Direct Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) [now called
Telcordia], research and development facilities
