Are Hewlett Packard PC motherboards a standard configuration?

Clarification of Question by tcbakerkw-ga on 28 Mar 2005 15:46 PST
Newer HP Motherboards, approx 2 or 3 years old with 1.2 Ghz processor
(I do not know yet if it it an AMD, or Celeron or Intel)? This is not
mine, I am getting ready to repair it for a lady at work (lightning
strike). I have yet to physically "see" the Mobo. I hope to replace it
(if needed) with an ATX or other standard Mobo.

Well if it was a lighting strike than you may have to replace the cpu
and almost everything else along with it. Not knowing what her mobo is
I cannot give you a straight answer on weither or not the new mobo
will fit into her case. On the upside you can always purchase a case
online for about $20-$50.

lightning strike=doom for system mb. being only 1.2ghz, it would be
best to just get a better mb with more ghz. going to 2.0ghz would run
maybe $100 in the right places, or even a used tower complete with
more than 1.2 ghz could be found for $100-$150.

Most of the HP Systems are non-standard footprint. HP does not want
you to upgrade/repair their systems. They prefer that you replace
them. Which class of system is it Pavilion, Vectra or Brio? A model
number would be nice too.

FYI
Even if you only have to replace the power supply, you will most
likely see additional component failures with in the next 9 months do
to the damage caused from the strike.

The surge will start the brake down of the impurities in the
semiconductors. It?s the impurities that allow electricity to flow
through silicon. So given a few power cycles and heating / cooling of
the damaged IC's its only a matter of time.

In our repair shop 87% of the systems hit by lighting, have additional
component failure with in the next 9 months.
