I recently heard a song this evening on a Jeff Buckley album, which I
eventually recognised as being in a film that I had seen. The song was
called Hallelujah, but in the film it was covered by Tom Waits, as I
remember. To add to the complication, it was actually written by
Leonard Cohen originally.

So to sum up: Leonard Cohen wrote the song, which was covered by Jeff
Buckley on his album and by Tom Waits. The latter version I remember
hearing in a film - I think possibly at the end credits. It may also
be on one of Waits' albums, but I have no idea.

The thing that is driving me crazy is... which film was this song
featured in, as sung by Tom Waits? I can't find it anywhere.

Could you be thinking of John Cale's version?

It was used in two movies (Basquiat and Shrek).

Ah yes... you're right, it was by John Cale and it was of course Shrek
where I'd heard it. Thanks for putting me out of my misery!
