Question ID: 501816
I worked for a small company (less than 20 employees) who promoted the
practice of software licence sharing. In one instance, a certain
individualy licensed program, was shared by at least 3 employees. A
company e-mail was sent allocating the one license to more than one
employee, stating "we are not supposed to do this, but...".
I left the company recently, and left with a bad taste.
I was wondering about 1. the seriousness of the offense, including
possible fines, etc. 2. Who would be interested in this information? I
have retained a copy of the company email directing employees to share
licenced files (from the Vice President).

Thanks

The Business Software Alliance (http://www.bsa.org) is a clearinghouse
for this sort of thing. I believe they have an online form to make
anonymous reports.

Would you not be worried of being blackballed, or even sued by the
company for taking information? What would squealing get you? The
worst that could happen is that they get a warning and they buy the
requisite copies and that's it. Not much damage at all.

The fines that can be charged could put a small business out of
business, it is a serious offense. The BSA and SIIA have done a lot ot
educate users in the last 10 years and piracy is no longer an accepted
practice. The penalties are appropriately stiff.
