I am looking for famous great horse (or equestrian) quote. Any ideas? The
quote will be used in a brochure about a TV program on horses.
Something old maybe. Something recognisable - not necessarily - if
it's from a very famous person. Something that says the strength,
beauty and love of horses (and riding them?). Horse in the country
side.

Dear travisjon-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. I?ve
done my best to try and provide you with quotes and proverbs that are
my personal favorites or are well known. In some cases (as you
mentioned) the quotes may not be nearly as well known as the person to
whom it is attributed. At any rate, the majority of the ones I have
provided are both amusing and touching.

Here is my favorite, and probably the best known. It?s such a simple
statement, yet it conveys volumes about the man/horse relationship:

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the
inside of a man."
-- Sir Winston Churchill

Here are some others:

?In riding a horse, we borrow freedom.?
-- Helen Thomson

"The air of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears."
-- Arabian Proverb

"God forbid that I should go to any heaven where there are no horses."
-- R.B. Cunningham-Graham

"We have almost forgotten how strange a thing it is that so huge and
powerful and intelligent an animal as a horse should allow another,
and far more feeble animal, to ride upon its back."
-- Peter Gray

"To be loved by a horse, or by any animal, should fill us with awe -
for we have not deserved it."
-- Marion C. Garretty

"There's nothing in life that's worth doing, if it can't be done from a horse..."
--Red Steagall- "Born to this Land"

"The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD."
-- Holy Bible, Proverbs 21:31

?The wagon rests in winter, the sleigh in summer, the horse never.?
-- Yiddish Proverb

?No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.?
-- Winston Churchill

(This one probably isn?t applicable, but funny nonetheless)
?There are fools, damn fools, and those who remount in a steeplechase.?
-- Bill Whitbread

?...through his mane and tail the high wind sings, fanning the hairs,
who wave like feather'd wings.?
-- Shakespeare, ?Venus and Adonis?

?A horse is a thing of such beauty... none will tire of looking at him
as long as he displays himself in his splendor.?
-- Xenophon

?There is no secret so close as that between a rider and his horse.?
-- Old equine expression

?A prince is never surrounded by as much majesty on his throne as he
is on a beautiful horse.?
-- William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle

?Whether you regard the horse with awe or love, it is impossible to
escape the sheer power of his presence.?
-- Mary Wanless

?When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: He trots the air; the earth
sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical
than the pipe of Hermes.?
-- Shakespeare

?She was iron-sinew'd and satin-skinn'd. Ribb'd like a drum and limb'd
like a deer,
Fierce as the fire and fleet as the wind-- There was nothing she
couldn't climb or clear.?
--Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833-1870), Australian poet

?The horse has so docile a nature, that he would always rather do
right than wrong, if he can only be taught to distinguish one from the
other.?
-- George Melville (1821-1878), Scottish writer

?[The mare] set off for home with the speed of a swallow, and going as
smoothly and silently. I never had dreamed of such a motion, fluent
and graceful, and ambient, soft as the breeze flitting over the
flowers, but swift as the summer lightning.?
-- Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900), English writer

?I ride, therefore I am.?
-- Unknown

?The Horse: Here is nobility without conceit, friendship without envy,
beauty without vanity, a willing servant, yet no slave.?
-- Unknown

?They are more beautiful than anything in the world, kinetic
sculptures, perfect form in motion.?
-- Kate Millett

?A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse!?
-- William Shakespeare, The Tragedy of King Richard the Third (King
Richard at V, iv)

If short poems or excerpts are of interest to you for the purposes of
this project, here, in my opinion, are some wonderful ones:

?Round-hoofed, short-jointed, fetlocks shag and long,
Broad breast, full eye, small head, and nostril wide,
High crest, short ears, straight legs and passing strong,
Thin mane, thick tail, broad buttock, tender hide:
Look what a horse should have he did not lack,
Save a proud rider on so proud a back.?
-- William Shakespeare, Venus and Adonis (l. 295)

?Gamaun is a dainty steed,
Strong, black, and of a noble breed,
Full of fire, and full of bone,
With all his line of fathers known;
Fine his nose, his nostrils thin,
But blown abroad by the pride within;
His mane is like a river flowing,
And his eyes like embers glowing
In the darkness of the night,
And his pace as swift as light.?
-- Barry Cornwall (pseudonym of Bryan Waller Procter), ?The Blood Horse?

My wife who adores riding, will kill me, but my favourite is Oscar
Wilde's " They are dangerous at both ends and uncomfortable in the
middle"
