Hi Paul,
While a Researcher is answering this for you, just thought I'd mention
what I am sure you already know: 5 mg Proscar (finasteride) is
usually prescribed for benign prostate enlargement; Propecia, the
trade name of the same drug (finasteride) prescribed for hair loss,
usually comes in 1 mg tablets. Thus, if your doctor prescribes
Proscar 5 mg for hair loss, it is likely you will also be told to buy
a pill cutter and cut the 5 mg tablets into four pieces, thus
approximating more closely the approporiate dosage of finasteride
prescribed for hair loss. More finasteride is not necessarily better
for hair loss--recent studies show that men taking finasteride who
also developed prostate cancer usually developed a more serious and
hard-to-treat variant of the disease. See the second paragraph under
the heading, "Headline results of the study" at
http://www.ishrs.org/articles/finasteride-prostate-cancer.htm. So if
indeed you are using Proscar for hair loss, please make sure you ask
your doctor about proper dosing. See also
