Question ID: 503016
I have a question regarding playing digital video simultaneously on
the computer monitor and on an external LCD projector. The video
shows up fine on the computer screen but not on the LCD projector.
Everything else shows up well on the projector; only video is
affected.

Example: You are giving a PowerPoint Presentation that includes a
video. When you get to the slide with the video, you click it and it
seems to play fine on the computer. Yet the audience (watching
through the LCD projector) sees a blank screen in the section where
the video should be playing.

Thanks. David Uttal (daviduttal@gmail.com)

What do you mean by "everything else shows up fine on the projector"?

I mean that all other elements of the presentation show up fine.
Anything EXCEPT video will show up both on the resident monitor on the
laptop as well as on the LCD external projector. It is only the video
that doesn't show on the LCD projector.

I see this all the time. I had someone explain to my why it happens,
but that will get long, and really I don?t remember. Most laptops you
will need to toggle a function key to turn on the video port on the
back. This normally has three settings, laptop LCD, LCD and external
monitor, and external monitor only. For the video to show you must
have it in external monitor out only. You can not have both the LCD
and the external monitor on at the same time and show a video clip. I
don?t like it, but that is just the way it is?.

Have you gotten any resolution on this? I have been experiencing this
problem since getting a new external monitor yesterday. Video plays
on the laptop screen, but not on the external monitor, just as you
described.

BUT, let me add some more info. I cannot switch to just the external
display. It shows 'Out of Range'. Works fine in dual mode where
everything on the laptop screen and the monitor are mirrored. Also
works fine in 'expansion' mode where laptop screen and external
monitor are different parts of the desktop.

This is all with my old IBM Thinkpad X20 running Windows 98, with ATI
Rage graphics card.

'Course the interesting note is that with my new Dell X300 notebook,
everything works just fine, and I *am* able, contrary to a previous
comment, to play video simultaneously on both laptop and external
monitor.

Would love to get it working with my Thinkpad though as the Dell is my
work computer.

Well, I fixed my problem, dunno how it will apply for you.

As is often the case, for me it was a matter of updating my ATI
display adapter driver to the latest version.

Once updated, I am able to switch to external monitor only (which I
was having problems with) as well as run video simultaneously on both
laptop screen and external montior (though admittedly my old thinkpad
seems to struggle when I do this and sometimes the video is jumpy -
works much better to pick one screen only).

I have had this issue on two different laptops and the answer both
times has been in the display settings. right click on your desktop
and go to properties\settings\advanced and then it will start to get
unique depending on what display driver you use. In my case of Nvidia
I wound up at Overlay Controls made some changes which were self
evident and presto, it shows on both screens.
Good luck

I'm glad you can get a duplicate image on the screen. I can't even get
that! The best I can do is either:

1. Extended windows desktop on the projector screen (as if it were a
second monitor)

2. Switch from laptop to projector screen in which case the projector
becomes the primary monitor with nothing showing on the laptop apart
from the background picture of the desktop.

How do you get a mirror image!?
