Is French perfume diluted to sell to stores in America? I am wondering if pure perfume (NOT Eau de Parfum, etc.) made in France, like SHALIMAR by Guerlain, is better smelling and less diluted if you get it in France. Also, How do I go about ordering straight from Guerlain? |

Generally, no. The traditional strengths are: perfume (or parfum) 15 - 25%, eau de perfume 8 - 15%, eau de toilette 4 - 10%, and eau de cologne 2 - 4%, with the later two being successively weaker than the full strength perfume. Manufacturing is strictly controlled from their factories -- regardless of destination. If a weaker "version" is needed for a certain market, usually they develop a separate brand name for it. This strategy preserves the integrity of the original product. However, there is a black market that illegally uses the factory-issued packaging with the liquid either diluted or replaced. On a closely related aspect, there are the "notes." The high note is that part of the fragrance smelled first but lasts only a short while. The heart note is the part that mixes with a body's chemicals and last for a few hours. The base note can last for many hours. |
