How long is the longest domestic cat ever recorded? How tall was the tallest cat? I have found lots of info on huge fat cats... but, I want to know about length (nose to tail) and height. You see, my cat is really big... I mean REALLY big and I want to know if he is normal. -Susan | |

Hi thefuturebird: Thanks for the great question. Well, the length (nose to tail) record was fairly easy to find: Guinness World Records - Longest Cat URL: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/content_pages/record.asp?recordid=51254 Quote: "Normally a large breed, Maine Coons often weigh as much as 10 kg (22 lb), but Leo weighs in at a mog-nificent 15.8 kg (35 lb) and measures a record-breaking 121.9 cm (48 in) from nose to tail." I was unable to find a record for "tallest" cat (measured paw to shoulder). Thanks. websearcher Search Strategy: * guinness record cats |

I couldn't find any world record for height either, although you can get the general idea of near-maximum heights from the measurements given for really big cats. The previous world-record holder for length, Snowbie, is 13 inches tall, which is quite tall. Information on Snowbie and other huge cats can be found here: http://www.messybeast.com/freak-size.htm Here's another huge cat, which the owner says "stands a foot at the shoulder". http://www.meankitty.com/Gallery/bundles.htm So I would guess that above 12 or 13 inches, a domestic cat is pretty much reaching record matching height. It also depends if you want to count domesticated jungle cats or domestic-jungle cat cross-breeds such as the Chausie breed. These cats can get quite big and are especially tall! Check out the pictures here: http://www.wildkatz.net/Chausie_Gallex.html http://www.wildkatz.net/Studsx.html http://www.tristatevets.com/catpics/wildcatcyn/ An ad (at http://www.altpet.net/adoptlink4.shtml) linking to the latter page says "Careful breeding has created these tall (14 to 17 inches at the shoulder when standing on all fours), long-bodied, BIG, wild looking cats..." Hopefully the links and pictures help you get a sense of a cat's maximum height. |
