Question ID: 50385
I would like the exact address and phone # in which to contact the
Attorney's Office or Law firm that represents the Disneyland
Corporation in Anaheim, CA.
I was a visitor to Disneyland back in the summer of 1978 or 1979.
During my family's visit that day we witnessed an incident in which a
woman died on the newly added rolercoaster ride "Space Mountain".
Her relatives sued Disneyland for 10 Million. As it goes... over the
next 7 to 9 years following the accident, me and 2 other family
member's gave depositions and Testified on Disneyland's behalf as a
result to witnessing the previous 2 hours (directly behind her and her
family in the winding line to board the ride)of this woman repeatedly
collapsing onto the pavement and being temporarily rescued by her
family and them replacing her into the line again for Boarding of the
ride.
This all occurred when I was 11 or 12 and even though I can recall the
name of the Lawyer who worked closely with preparing our testimony for
Disneyland, I have since come to find that this particular Attorney
has since passed away. When this case was finally settled for an
undisclosed amount of $... M. McCray (Disneyland Attorney)told us we
could always count on "free lifetime admissions" to Disneyland in the
future. (up to 10 addmissions at any time!)
We were living in Colorado when this case finally ended and I have
since moved back to Sunny California. I have little information to
help me find out how to take advantage of this Lawyers promise to us
so long ago!
Please help!
Could you help

Hello.

I've found numerous published reference to an attorney for Disneyland
by the name of "McCain" rather than "McCray."

These excerpts are from a newspaper database:

"Disneyland attorney Richard McCain, who defends the park against
lawsuits, agreed-but said visitors need to watch out for their own
safety as well."
From:
"Litigious World After All Disneyland Rides Have Generated 650-Plus
Suits"
The Los Angeles Times; Apr 16, 1995; CHRIS WOODYARD;

"Disney attorney Richard McCain said security officers spoke to Canada
no longer than 40 minutes."
From:
"Woman loses suit against Disney"
Orange County Register; Santa Ana; Dec 6, 1997; JEFF KRAMER:

"Disneyland attorney Richard E. McCain of Santa Ana would not discuss
the case except to say the morning's discussions had been 'fruitful.'"
From:
"Disneyland, Ride Victim's Family Settle Woman Died in Matterhorn
Accident"
The Los Angeles Times; Mar 16, 1988; JESS BRAVIN;

"Richard E. McCain, an attorney for the amusement park, told jurors in
the courtroom of Judge Jerrold S. Oliver that Yorba's death was a
tragedy that Disneyland could not have prevented."
From
"Trial Begins in Lawsuit Over Disneyland Death"
The Los Angeles Times Jul 10, 1986; JOHN SPANO;

Martindale.com offers an online directory for attorneys.
See Richard E. McCain's listing for more information, including
contact information:

search strategy: "disneyland attorney"

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I was very happy to read the excerpt's and visited the Newspaper
database, but I believe Richard McCain is now Disneylands Attorney but
I'm 97% certain that Mike McCray was the lawyer who was present in
past meetings & Depositions with my family. I think he passed away 12
to 15 years ago.
Also it was the Space Mountain Ride not the Matterhorn Ride. How is
it I can find or access the Incident I have referred to in 1978 or any
earlier Documentaion in regards to Mike McCray through a newspaper
database when the earliest year available is approx 1986?
Please explain in more detail exactly how you would go about
researching / accessing the most reliable data or information
regarding this event.

Hello.

Thank you for providing the first name. I did a search on "Mike
McCray" and found his name in reference to another Space Mountain
lawsuit in which a young man was injured:
"Disneyland attorney W. Mike McCray said that jurors 'just didn't find
we did anything wrong,'"
From:
Disneyland Ride Victim Loses Lawsuit Jury Rules Against Man Injured in
Space Mountain Accident
The Los Angeles Times ; Mar 8, 1985; STEVE TRIPOLI

Articles from before the mid-1980s are generally not in online
databases. If you'd like to find articles from the 1970s and early
'80s, you'll need to a library (e.g., Los Angeles public library, or
UCLA) that has only issues on microfilm. They'll have indexes for old
issues the L.A. Times and Orange County Register and can help you find
any articles that were written about the Space Mountain incident.

Consistent with your recollection that Mr. McCray has passed away,
California State Bar records [ http://www.calsb.org ] indicate that
there is no longer a licensed attorney by the name of W. Michael
McCray. There's another Michael L McCray who is an attorney, but he
only became a lawyer in 1993, so he's much too young to be your Mike
McCray.

In any case, Mr. Richard McCain has handled Disney litigation since
the mid-1980s. He would be the one to contact. See the California
State Bar records for additional contact information:
http://www.calsb.org/cgi-bin/NT201C?086847

Good luck!

That contained a couple typos. It should have been:
"... you'll need to use a library (e.g., Los Angeles public library or
UCLA) that has old issues on microfilm."

Once again, good luck with your research! Let me know if you need any
additional assistance.

I feel better now knowing I was somewhat on the right track with Mike
McCray's name being correct. Thank you. I live in Bakersfield, CA.
(approx 2 hrs from LA area) is there somewhere locally that I could
access those Microfilms from the mid 70's from the Los Angeles Times
or Orange Register? I would certainly appreciate it if you could help
direct me? Again, thank you for all your research and information! I
would never have found that info on my own!

Hello.

The library at California State University - Bakersfield has the Los
Angeles Times on microfilm. They also have the indexes.
They're located at 9001 Stockdale Hwy., Bakersfield, CA 93311,
Telephone (661)664-3172
http://www.lib.csub.edu/

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any libraries in the Bakersfield area
that have the Orange County Register on microfilm. It's not as popular
of a newspaper. For issues from the 1970s and early '80s, when the
paper was known as the Santa Ana Register, you'd have to go to one of
the following libraries:
Huntington Beach Library
Los Angeles County Public Library
Orange County Public Library
Santa Ana Public Library
U.C. Irvine Main Library
CSU Fullerton
These results were obtained from the California Digital Library:
http://www.cdlib.org/

Good luck!

I think this "ask a question" idea is GREAT! I would never have had
the time or access to the information that I was provided by
Juggler-ga. Thanks Again!
