Dear Bou, The name Lebeau appears in Shakespeare's play "As You Like It". It is a name that appears in this play, and most sites trace the origin to Shakespeare. The word "beau" means "fair, beautiful" in French (and describes a young gentleman, an "admirer" and "lover" consequently in English) and since "Le" is equal to the English "the" in this case, it is safe to assume, that Lebeau means "the beautiful". See: Answers.com - Definition of Beau <http://www.answers.com/beau&r=67> As You Like It <http://www.online-literature.com/shakespeare/youlike/> Baby's Names: Meaning of Lebeau <http://www.cool-baby-names.com/Search/search-alphabetical-results.asp?Name=LeBeau> I hope this answered your question. I won't argue with that, just wonder if Shakespeare is the source for the family name here where I live, where French surnames are usually Huguenot, but that, of course, does not change the meaning of the name, just suggests that it was a "telling" surname before or independent of WS's using it. |
