gibbyg-ga,
You've asked about quite an interesting fellow, at least as far as the
internet records allow. Trained in Australia in dentistry, he has
practiced in Australia, England and in several places in the the
United States, studied and taught at numerous universities, published
dozens of professional papers, recieved awards, research grants and
recognition aplenty, and not that long ago, earned his J.D. degree in
the study of law from WVU.
Whew!
You asked specifically about his tenure at Michigan, and the record
there is no less rich. He served as Chairman and Professor of the
Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan School of
Dentistry from 1983-1987, and served at the school in other capacities
as well until 1990, before moving on to become the Associate Dean for
Research and Graduate Education at the School of Dental Medicine,
University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Vig's highly detailed Curriculum Vitae is posted online, and I
have included a link to it below. It will probably provide most, if
not all, of the detail you are seeking about his professional career.
In addition, I've found a few other sources as well which I've also
included here, even though they do not add appreciably to the overall
record of the C.V. Nevertheless, there are other avenues of
information you can pursue if you're so inclined, and I've mentioned
these as well.
I trust the information below fully answers your question.
However, please don't rate this answer until you have everything you
need. If you would like any additional information, just post a

and I'm at your service.
All the best,

Many states make certain information available online regarding
licensed professionals in the state, including dentists. I found two
state records for Dr. Vig -- in Michigan and Pennsylvania -- both of
which are only notable for their lack of information. There is
nothing in either record regarding professional complaints or
disciplinary actions:

I checked other states as well in which Dr. Vig has worked, but did
not find any currently-posted license information.

It is possible to get "background checks" on medical professionals
from a number of commercial sources. I've listed one here --
ChoiceTrust -- in case you want to purchase a report on Dr. Vig:
http://www.choicetrust.com/servlet/com.kx.cs.servlets.CsServlet?channel=health&product=doctor&subproduct=search&anchor=
As noted towards the bottom of the page, the Credential Report on a
doctor or dentist MAY include any/all of the following, but there is
no promise as to how comprehensive a given report may be:
-----
Your report may include:
General information about the health care provider including:
- Credentials
- Areas of Practice
- Residencies
- Addresses
- Education
- and more
License information
- Issue Date
- Expiration Date
- Type
- Status
- and more
and detail license related items including:
- Actions
- Consent Orders
- Dismissals
- Advisory Letters
- Sanctions
- Consent Agreements
- Non-disciplinary Communications
- and other info
-----
Please note that I am not recommending such a report, and in fact, I
can't imagine it would add much to the information presented in this
answer. Nonetheless, the reports are available from this service for
Dr. Vig at a cost of about $10 each if you're so inclined.

Lastly, there is Dr. V's rather impressive C.V. which is posted at the
University of West Virginia site with which he is currently
affiliated:
http://www.as.wvu.edu/soc_a/sociology/faculty/Vig/vita.htm
With that, I believe you probably have all the publicly-available
information one could hope for. But again, if there's anything else I
can do for you, just let me know.

Hello again,
I took a look at a legal database to see what -- if anything -- turned
up, but I did not find any cases involving Dr. Vig. I took a
particular look at West Virginia, but again, nothing.
A detailed search of legal records is a very complex task and is
outside the scope of your original question, but you are always
welcome to post a new question if you wanted to pursue legal research
in more detail. However, it is conventional for expert witness work
to be listed on a professional C.V. and I did not see any such
activity on Dr. Vig's C.V., so I would be surprised if a detailed
search would turn up anything else.
Dr. Vig did turn up in an interesting newspaper article regarding his
tenure at Pittsburgh. Here are some excerpts from that article:
----------
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
December 25, 1994
Dental school filled with debate
To bolster its sagging research reputation, the University of
Pittsburgh dental school went shopping for new talent in 1990 and
brought back what seemed like a prize catch...His name is Peter Vig,
and when he arrived from the University of Michigan to become an
associate dean for research he brought with him a kitty of grant money
bigger than anyone already at the school had...
Vig said his mandate from the man who recruited him, Jon Suzuki, the
school's dean, was to help the school achieve a scientific reputation
that Pitt's medical center already enjoyed. But Vig's enthusiasm soon
turned to disappointment, and he quit after four years...Vig said
growing unrest among faculty and a curious shift in emphasis to
cutting costs made him wonder if the school's days were numbered.
''A number of us felt there was an impending closure -- that all of
this was a deliberate running down of the school,'' said Vig, 58, who
left for Ohio State in August, taking most of a $ 1.5 million grant
with him. ''I decided it's time to get out.''...
Vig's departure shook the school and has fueled an extraordinary
effort by some faculty to oust Suzuki...The in-fighting, like Vig's
departure, could not have come at a worse time for the 99-year-old
institution, which is struggling for stability at a time when dental
schools across the nation are closing.
...Vig, who arrived from the University of Michigan shortly after
Suzuki began, said the problems ran deeper...He said that as early as
1991 he began noticing changes in the school's
priorities...Inexpensive and questionable hires, budget cuts and a
shift away from research at a school that had pronounced its
commitment in that area made him wonder about the institution's
future...For Vig, the final straw came in two forms: faculty surveys
showing widespread displeasure with Suzuki and what he perceived as a
decision by top Pitt administrators not to get involved...''How many
more hints do you need?'' Vig said. ''I really thought that was a test
of the value the university places on the school of dental medicine.''

In addition, there was brief mention of his entrance into the bar in West Virginia:
Charleston Gazette (West Virginia)

Supreme Court admits new lawyers to practice
[Peter Vig is listed as one of those admitted]
I hope that additional information is of interest to you.
