My cousin is considering going to either Reed College in Oregon or New
York University in NYC. I would like to get baseline information
about each option in order to help advise him on his decision. His
current interests are journalism and theater, but will also likely
pursue a degree or dual major that will allow him to get a more
traditionally gainful employment.

I am looking for the kind of information that would allow one to
formulate a case for going to one shcool or the other. I do not want
to present a case for either one -- just to get a bunch of relevant
info together.

I am looking for any information that you, as a professional
researcher, would find important or interesting, including but not
limited to:

- Relevant stats on Reed and NYU (# students, GPA, breakdown by
depatrment / major, acclaimed departments, faculty ratios, nobel
laureats on staff, etc - the kind of things you would want to know
about a school before picking it).

- Summary of or links to qualitative / reviews / feedback / commentary
info on each school.

- Comparison of post-graduate employment & salaries if available

- Comparison of basic demographics and industries in Portland vs NYC

- For each city, number of: theaters, publishers, newspapers (or similar info).

- Anything else you think would be interesting or helpful.

Thank you, Justin

Just to make sure we're on the right page here:

NYU has a student body of almost 40,000; Reed College has just over 1,000.

It's hard to imagine a head to head comparison when the schools are so
very different in size, not to mention locale and academic
orientation.

Are you quite certain these are the two schools you want to have compared?

Hello justins-ga,

I?ve collected information to help you answer all the questions you
have about NYU and Reed College. The schools are very different and
comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. So, does your
cousin prefer ?apples? or ?oranges?? I suggest that you or your cousin
develop a list of criteria for evaluating colleges and majors and then
review what each school has to offer. The links I?ve collected will
help you with getting started. I?ve grouped the links for each school
and I?ve also included a collection of Web sites dedicated to
evaluating colleges. These will help you continue your explorations.

Best wishes to your cousin for a satisfying and happy college experience.

College Rankings

Since 1995 Reed College has refused to participate in the U.S. News
and World Report "best colleges" rankings. Several times Reed's stance
on the rankings has put the college in the national spotlight, most
prominently in a Rolling Stone magazine article that raised serious
concerns about the U.S. News best colleges issue.

Reed does participate in several other well-established college guides
that do not assign numerical rankings to institutions, including
Barron's, the Fiske Guide to Colleges, Peterson's, Colleges that
Change Lives, Newsweek's College Guide, and the College Board's
College Handbook. Each of these guides attempts to describe more fully
the experience, student culture, and academic environment at different
schools. Consistent with Reed's non-participation in U.S. News
rankings, the college also does not participate in Money magazine's
college-ranking issue.

Welcome to a virtual community of Reedies. Have you ever wondered what
that quiet guy in class must be thinking, or what kind of movies one

psyche of the Reed community? Now you can find out. Excited? So am I.
All it takes is to write your thoughts. Everyone counts, so join now!

My idea is to give every current student at Reed College a blog... an
open atmosphere where they can express themselves and their thoughts
to the world. Not everybody will want to participate, but even if you
don't write in a public journal, they sure are fun to read.

America's 25 Hot Schools

HOTTEST FOR CITY LOVERS
New York University, New York, N.Y.
The erstwhile TV show "Felicity" helped make NYU a TV star, but in
2004-05 the campus will be home to some real-life celebrities: the
Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley. Not that NYU needs extra star
power. Even after September 11, the school continued to draw
applications from more than 17,000 talented students. One of the top
attractions is the Tisch School of the Arts, which nurtures future
actors, dancers and screenwriters. The business school is also highly
rated, and students can take advantage of internships on Wall Street,
just a subway ride away. Although NYU doesn't have a campus in the
traditional sense (the buildings are scattered throughout Greenwich
Village), few students complain. Instead of a single grassy quad,
they've got a whole city to explore.
