Have some basic questions about starting a business in NY state. Do I need liability insurace to be a sole proprietor, painting contractor in NY state? How much is enough for this line of work? I do NOT use scaffolding, do exterior painting, or work over three stories. Also-- Do I need to register my business name if my persanal name is in the title? I have a tax ID number, and that is it. |

Hello, mbalz-ga: The New York State Governor's Office has an agency that operates the website www.NYS-PERMITS.org (also www.NYS-OPAL.com). That website will help answer some of your basic questions, and will allow you to apply for many New York State business permits & licenses online. If you have more specific questions and need to speak with someone, they operate a Business Permits Unit, staffed with people who are exceptionally knowledgeable about NY State business permits & licenses. The toll-free number is 1-800-342-3464, and they're available Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM. Good luck to you! -Scott |
