Hello
I live near a university, and when my children needed music lessons we
were very happy using graduate students who moonlighted as teachers.
I don't know if the teacher you seek is for yourself or for a child,
but in our children's case the grad students were excellent teachers,
and they also set good personal examples as young, hip people who took
their music seriously.
You have the benefit of living less than 5 miles from Stony Brook University.

"Germaine" answered the phone and was happy to give me the names and
telephone numbers of members of the violin program who are available
for lessons. I won't list them here for the sake of their privacy,
but Germaine said there would be no problem with your calling her.
Chances are all of them have cars and will have no problem coming to
you.
Some of the people that Germaine listed have local (area code 631)
numbers; others show 212 or 617 numbers but those are probably their
permanent home numbers and you should be able to obtain their local
numbers by making the long distance call. Also, in some cases their
listing indicates whether they will teach 'all ages,' 'prefer
non-beginners,' etc.
When we shopped for music teachers, we booked a 'trial lesson' for an
agreed fee. Some of the string teachers that we encountered put the
greatest emphasis on technique (elbow, wrist, etc.); others on
musicality. Some expected the student to work on scales; others went
right to the music. You'll want to choose a teacher whose approach is
most compatible with the student's personality and focus.
Best of luck and let us know how it goes!
