I love graffiti. I live in Manhattan and on a recent trip to Brooklyn
I discovered (to my dismay) that the graffiti there is much more
prolific and exciting. In Manhattan you?re lucky if tags stay up for
even a week. I get sad when I think about all of the art I've missed
because it gets cleaned so fast...It?s like there?s a war on my
favorite kind of public
art. I moved to NYC to enjoy the graffiti. What kind of activism can I
do to help bring graffiti back to Manhattan and to help make it easier
for people to put up graffiti and to ensure it stays up longer. I also
want to see the train painted again. Are there any organizations I can
give money to or work for?

While you wait for a researcher to provide your answer, here's a heads
up about a Graffiti MOVIE that played at the Tribeca Film Festival in
2003 and won some awards at other festivals over the past couple of
years. Now it's getting a full release --in May, I believe.

It's called "BOMB THE SYSTEM." Here's the official website:

Do you own a nice car? Put a sign on it "paint me, tag me, make me
yours," and leave it parked for a week at 183rd Street and St.
Nicholas Ave.

You don't mind having your own property sprayed, do you?

I don't own a car. But, maybe I could get some people together to buy
a wall or something? It's really sad what's happened to the city.

HI,
You are too young, or maybe just too late. You really should have
been there a generation ago when the subway trains were covered with
graffiti.
My congratulations the the City for having gotten control of the situation.

If you have money to invest - as you suggest - what about buying a
glazier's truck with a frame to hold large panels of glass and provide
the sprayers with a surface they could use. Who knows, maybe you
could open a gallery and sell them.

Great idea bud. Probably a business venture in that suggestion. rich
New Yorkers could have "street art" in their $5m appartments !
