I have heard at a past seminar that there is a *non-resident* application out there that allows a user to easily close all ports Windows XP unnecessarily listens on by default. As a result of this, a "netstat /a" command should produce a blank list on a clean XP installation. I am looking for the name and website of that application, or any other application that would allow me to achieve the same results. Please note that I am *not* looking for a firewall, which is resident by design (i.e. a process running in the background at all times). |

Thanks for the links - I had actually read both of these pages while my doing my own initial research. I'm basically looking for an app that can automate all those steps described in there. |

StopListening http://www.nonebar.com/sl.html When the "StopListening!" button is pressed, a series of configuration changes is applied that will close all wide-open (technically, in a "Listening" state) TCP and UDP server ports that come with each and every copy of Windows 2000/XP shipped, thus shielding you from any future Sasser-like worm infections. Protocols that are closed by StopListening include SMB, NBT, DCOM, SSDP, IPSEC, and Task Scheduler. Just run a "netstat -a" to verify for yourself. While this does not remove the need for a good firewall, it does provide an added layer of protection to the security-conscious PC user. |

This looks like what I've been looking for. Well done! I'm now going to try this on a test system. |

OK, works beautifully! This is the very first time I'm able to achieve this 'netstat' result: C:\>netstat -an Active Connections Proto Local Address Foreign Address State C:\> Thank you again. Is there anything I should do to close out this question? |
