I am reliably informed that the details often given for Knight?s
arrival in the world are wrong!

The WRONG details are Mitcham, Surrey, England on 4 Sept 1900.

What are the CORRECT details, please?

Many thanks!

Hi, thx1138½

I believe that his birth year of 1900 was correct.

I also believe that he had not reached the age of 68 when he died,
notwithstanding the obit you have quoted.

Have you locked the question?

Or is it Answerfinder or Leli?

Come on out ... whoever you are!

Hi, Freddy

The 1901 Census?

I can't even find all my ancestors in that thing.

Will do some more digging.

Many thanks

Steph

You are a magician!

As well as being slated for the Yul Brynner part in the upcoming movie
"The Womenfolk of the Magnificent Seven", you also seem to have dug
out the dirt on this one.

I don't suppose that you can post an Answer though ...

Go on .... Surprise me!

I guess that now that I've got the Answer, I am never going to get any
Researcher to claim the $7.50.

So ....

Hello probono!

Do you suspect the birth year to be incorrect? As it seems he was 68
when he died in 1968, which of course means, etc....

"On Wednesday January 27, 1968 Maxwell Knight died peaceably of heart
failure in a hospital at the age of sixty-eight."

Bryan,
I'm here! I think the only way is to obtain his birth certificate.

The Times obituary of Jan 27 1968 states his age was 67.

I?ve searched on 1837online.com. and there is a match for Charles
Henry M. Knight ? Croydon ? 2a 248 ? Volume Jul ? Aug ? Sep 1900

You can order the certificate here
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Other birth registrations during the period were;

Charles Henry Knight ? Kingston ? 2a 359 ? Volume Oct ? Nov ? Dec 1898
Charles Henry Knight ? Bristol ? 6a 160 ? Volume Oct ? Nov ? Dec 1898

Charles Henry Knight ? Pancras ? 1b 13 ? Volume Apr ? May - June ? 1900

Charles Henry Knight ? Strand ? 1b 630 ? Volume Jan ? Feb - Mar ? 1900

I should add I also tried the Times birth notices with no luck.

Hi, Answerfinder

Many thanks for your efforts.

The entry for Croydon looks very promising. I will order a Certificate and see.

In the meantime, I will leave the question open, just in case someone
out there already has the info.

All the Best

Presumably, his biography is included in the "Oxford Dictionary of
National Biography" (2004):

http://www.oup.com/oxforddnb/info/

However, my local library doesn't have a copy of the 2004 edition.

Apparently not mentioned in the 1901 census ("The 1901 Census for
England was taken on the night of 31 March 1901"):

Bryan, do you know the name of his father, or his mother?

Hi Bryan....

Surprisingly, Anthony Masters gave the wrong details in his biography
?The Man Who was M? (1984) and this has been the source for later
errors. You?d think that a biographer would get such facts right!

According to Knight?s Birth Certificate, he arrived at 199 Selhurst
Road, South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey, England on 9 July 1900. The
informant was his father Hugh Coleraine Knight who was a solicitor. It
seems likely that his father?s version of events is more reliable than
Anthony Masters.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

And indeed mentioned in the 1901 Census:
186, Selhurst Road, Croydon.

Easy to find once you've found out that according to
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

"Age in 1901: 9 months" equals "Estimated birth year: abt 1892".

176 (not: 186) Selhurst Road.

Hi, Freddy

Many thanks for rooting out the Census stuff.

However, your aabacus seems to be on the blink ...

The Census Date was 31 March 1901 (I think) and if Little Max arrived
on 9 July 1900 (as determined by Steph) his age would then have been
'approximately 9 months'.

So, everything gels!

My thanks to one and all!

Bryan
