Dear dougco-ga:

Karol Josef Wojtlya was 58 years old in 1978 when the Vatican's
College of Cardinals elected him the 264th Pope. At that time Wojtla
chose for himself the name the world would best know him by, John Paul
II.

The pope's official Latin name is Ioannes Paulus PP. II - in Italian
it is Giovanni Paolo PP. II. He was the first non-Italian pope elected
since Pope Adrian VI in 1522.
