At that time Wojtla chose for himself the name the world would best know him by, John Paul II. The pope's official Latin name is Ioannes Paulus PP. II - in Italian it is Giovanni Paolo PP. II. He was the first non-Italian pope elected since Pope Adrian VI in 1522. |
