Is there an accepted name for sites like slashdot, delicious,
and metafilter, that provide links to the best stuff elsewhere
on the web? |

Howdy, Paul.
One term I've seen used a lot recently is "community site." "Community
publishing [site]" is more specific, but much less common.
"News portal" and "community-moderated [news or discussion group or
system]" are other popular choices. The term "news" is sometimes used
very loosely, referring to things that aren't exactly CNN material.
;-)
Google Web Search: "community site OR sites" "like slashdot"

Google Web Search: "community publishing" "like slashdot"

Google Web Search: "news portal OR portals" slashdot
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22news+portal+OR+portals%22+slashdot
Google Web Search: "community-moderated" slashdot

Is this sufficient as an answer, or are you needing more options?

I think community site is too vague. These sites are collections
of links. They're sort of free-form newspapers. Is "aggregator
site" a reasonable name, or does that mean something else?
Glad to have you on the case.

Here's a definition of "aggregator site." To me, this doesn't sound
like slashdot and its ilk:
"Aggregator Site
A site on the World Wide Web that acts as a catalog, linking to
Content Sites. Aggregator sites offer little content of their own, so
they are difficult to target effectively for advertising purposes.
World Wide Web users visit Aggregator Sites to find Content Sites.
Visitors to these sites stay only long enough to find the Content
Sites they are looking for."

I am rather taken by "community-moderated discussion group," myself. I
haven't found any sign that there is a universally-accepted name for
this sort of thing. Maybe another Researcher will be able to nail this
for you.

An article published this week describing delicious and other similar
sites, Business Week described the process behind their creation as
"tagging." One could therefore refer to them as "tagged content
sites," or "tagging indexes."

If this suffices for an answer, please let me know.

It sounds like they meet the definition of an aggregator...

There are some online references to Slashdot as an "aggregator."
However, since Slashdot and similar sites acquire their content
through submissions by users rather than through an automated
procedure, I don't think "aggregator" is the best term.
"A news aggregator is a piece of software or a remotely hosted service
that periodically reads a set of news sources, in one of several
XML-based formats (RSS or Atom), finds the new bits, and displays them
on a single page."
