I'm so sorry about the false start earlier. Here is a more complete
answer, which should replace my earlier, incomplete answer.
Short answer:
The most recent numbers I've been able to come up with are as follows.
According to the US 1997 census, there were 49,237 auto dealerships in
the US the last time the census was done in this area. See this page
for details:
http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/IQRTable?_ts=46557530680
And according to the National Association of Automobile Dealerships,
there are 21,800 new car dealerships in 2002.
This data is from the New Auto Dealerships report (PDF) available from
this page:
http://www.nada.org/Content/NavigationMenu/MediaCenter/NADAData/NADA_Data.htm
A rough breakdown of approximate numbers of authorized dealers by
manufacturer:
Daimler Chrysler 3,600
Ford 4,000
GM 7,715
Toyota 1,740
Honda 1,500
Nissan 1,500
Volkswagen 600
Audi 260
Total 20,915
These numbers are not exact, and they don't include such factors as
dealerships authorized with multiple manufacturers, nor do they
account for smaller manufacturers.
How I arrived at these numbers is described in detail below.
Longer answer:
A Google search on -"number of auto dealerships" us- resulted in a
link to this 1999 article from the St. Petersburg Times:
http://www.sptimes.com/century/turn/
In it, they claim:
"J. D. Power and Associates predicts that the number ... of auto
dealerships will decline from 25,000 to 18,000 (by the year 2000).
There are 22,400 dealerships in the U.S., according to the National
Automobile Dealers Association."
And this 1998 article called "IIR London 98' New Media Shopping and
Retail Banking Conference Paper," on the effects of the internet on
traditional businesses, claims a similar number for 1998:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/budd_margolis/iirNMS98.htm
The relevant section is as follows:
"Real estate, banking, insurance, automobile purchase will also
undergo severe change due to the efficiency of the Internet. predicts
The number of auto dealerships in the States will drop from 22,000
today to perhaps 10,000 of which many will be superlots. Source:
Boston Consulting's Ericksen"
The same prediction by Boston Consulting's Ericksen is quoted in this
article as well:
http://www-db.stanford.edu/pub/gio/CS99I/elcom.html
According to this page, the Census Bureau collects data on US business
every five years, in years ending with 2 and 7:
http://www.census.gov/svsd/www/97retail.html
From this page:
"FREQUENCY
Every 5 years since 1972, for years ending in "2" and "7." From 1929
through 1967, retail trade statistics were published periodically as
part of the census of business. Data collection begins in December of
the census year and responses are due back in about 8 weeks. Data are
requested for activities taking place during the census calendar
year."
So the 2002 census hasn't begun yet for this, and the most current
available data would be for 1997.
The U.S. Census Bureau lists the 1997 number of auto dealerships at
49,237, according to this PDF report:
http://www.census.gov/prod/ec97/97r44-sm.pdf
This is broken down in the report as follows:
New car dealers: 25,897
Used car dealers: 23,340
These numbers are roughly in line with the other data available,
showing a slight decrease over the years in the number of new car
dealers.
Used car dealers, of course, are not generally authorized by
manufacturer, so we'll throw these numbers out and try now to break
down the 20-odd thousand new car dealers by manufacturer.
The NADA Data report available here gives us information on total
sales by manufacturer:
http://www.nada.org/Content/NavigationMenu/MediaCenter/NADAData/NADA_Data.htm
Total number of vehicles sold in 2001, by manufacturer:
Daimler Chrysler 2,273,200
Ford 3,915,500
General Motors 4,852,500
Toyota 1,741,300
Honda 1,207,600
Nissan 703,700
Volkswagen 438,900
Other Imports 1,989,200
Total 17,121,900
And this page from the Department of Energy lists the approximate
numbers of dealers for the individual manufacturers:
http://www.ccities.doe.gov/vbg/consumers/dealers.shtml
The approximate numbers of Daimler Chrysler and Ford dealers,
according to this page, are as follows:
Daimler Chrysler 3,600
Ford 4,000
General Motors
A search on "GM dealers" results in a relevant snippet in this
article:
http://www.sun.com/executives/gm.html
"More than 75 percent, or roughly 5800 GM dealers, are currently
enrolled nationwide in the GM BuyPower program."
If this is accurate still, that would put the number of GM dealers
nationwide at about 7715.
Toyota
If you select "Facts and Figures" from this page, you'll see a map and
a series of menu items:
http://www.toyota.com/about/operations/numbers/index.html
Clicking on "By the Numbers" will get you this data:
Number of N.A. Toyota, Lexus, and Toyota Industrial Equipment Dealers
1,740
This number is a little large, as it includes all of North America,
and it includes dealers of industrial equipment, but it should be
pretty close to what you're looking for.
Honda
I can't find a solid answer for Honda dealerships right now, but a
quick look at the Honda dealers listed on autopedia.com at this URL
looks to be somewhere around 1,500 to 2,000:
http://autopedia.com/html/Honda_dlrs.html
Nissan
This press release from Nissan claims there are 1,500 Nissan and
Infiniti dealerships in North America:
http://www.nissannews.com/?http://www.nissannews.com/nissan/news/products/1997/10_14_97.shtml
From the tagline:
"In North America, Nissan's operations include styling, engineering,
manufacturing, sales, consumer and corporate finance, and industrial
and textile equipment. Nissan in North America employs more than
20,000 people in the United States, Canada and Mexico and generates
more than 70,000 jobs through its 1,500 Nissan and Infiniti
dealerships across the continent. More information on Nissan in North
America and the complete line of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles can be
found online at www.nissan-na.com."
Again, this number will be slightly large, because it includes all of
North America, and not just the US.
Volkswagen
From this page:
http://www.hoovers.com/co/capsule/9/0,2163,43979,00.html
"Volkswagen of America is the US sales arm of Volkswagen AG, one
Europe's largest automakers. The company sells Volkswagen and Audi
cars through about 600 Volkswagen dealerships and 260 AUDI dealerships
in the US."
Again, I apologize for the false answer I posted earlier. If you still
need more information, please feel free to ask for a clarification and
I'll see what else I can find for you.
Good luck,
Lisa.
