For a long time I've had a longing to go to Africa to do humanitarian
work. My parents went to Ethiopia when they were my age which is part
of why I'd like to go. I'm also hearing more and more about the AIDS
pandemic there and want to witness this firsthand and lend whatever
help I can. A while back I looked at short-term trips and wasn't able
to find much. It seemed that most people are looking for people to
come for a number of months at a time and right now, that's just not
feasible for me. Here's my ideal:
-A trip where I would be able to spend 6-8 days working with people on
community projects, education, etc. I don't have any "special skills"
(healthcare, etc.) and only speak English so I realize this limits me.
However, I do feel that I could accomplish a lot in this period of
time if given the right opportunity.
-A trip where I would see first-hand what some of the people in Africa
are experiencing. I want to have my eyes "opened" so to speak.
That's what my parents experienced during their trip and I want to go
through the same thing at this stage of my life.
-A "non-religious" trip. I don't mind going with a religious
organization but don't want the trip to be missionary-related.
I'm not sure if this is possible or just wishful thinking on my part.
However, I figured if anyone would know, this would be the place to
find out. If anyone has suggestions or personal knowledge of
organizations in Africa that take volunteers on a shorter-term basis,
please let me know. Thank you more than you know. :) |
