The figures above include only hotels which have 15 rooms or more,
which eliminates many bed & breakfast facilities and small hotels from
the tally. Here are some other, larger estimates:
"The hotel industry in this country is also a huge contributor to the
economy. According to 2003 figures, there were nearly 50,000 hotels in
the United States and they accounted for more than $1.5 trillion in
sales and $12.8 billion in pre-tax profits. The hotel industry is also
one of the nation's largest employers."

"Immigrants from India - mostly from the state of Gujarat and many
bearing the name Patel, which is common in the region - have, during
the last three decades, quietly acquired more than one-third of the
53,000 hotels in the United States, most of them budget and mid-priced
franchises, hotel industry officials say."
