sometimes it gives me a phone number, sometimes a message stating
hello, it is various messages from this sender(+88881), although they
do not seem like the type of message one would get from their carrier.

Ask your carrier if the above information is correct for your service.

It is a message from your cell-phone carrier. It may be a page, or an
SMS, or something else. What are the contents of the message?

There are some websites which use cellular service providers delivery
number to send messages. like you can send message from
smsjunction.com

also there are sites which can connect to the sms gateway and deliver
messages by name.

Most likely this is a case of mobile spam (in the truest sense - as it
is an unwanted message).

You don't say where you are/what carrier (operator) you are on, so
giving a full answer is tricky. Messages from application with short
numbers (5/6 digits) are known as short codes.

In some countries these are managed centrally (so the code is the same
no matter who your carrier is), on others there are done on a network
by network basis.

You could try reply with "STOP" - which will work with senders, and in
some places (e.g. the UK) is supported by (nearly) all senders.

If this fails, contact you service provider. And if that fails, vote
with your feet, explaining why you are changing networks. If this
fails, some new handsets let you filter incoming messages/calls -
