The Old Sow and Her Piglets is the second largest whirlpool in the world.

?The Old Sow whirlpool claims its title as the "Largest Whirlpool in
the Western Hemisphere" and is actually the second largest whirlpool
in the world.

The small whirlpools most often visible in the Old Sow area are called
"piglets" by the locals.

The Old Sow is generally at her largest and strongest in the spring
and when the tides are at their highest levels, during the full and
new moons.?

?The "Old Sow" and her piglets is the second largest whirlpool in the
world, the largest in the Western Hemisphere. As tides ebb and flow
in the area between Eastport, Maine, and Deer Island, New Brunswick,
and mix with the currents from the St. Croix River, the whirlpool
forms. The effects of an undersea mountain and several deep trenches
combine to enhance this phenomenon. The moon and wind further
contribute to the motion. Old Sow can be seen from the cul-de-sac at
the north end of Water Street, the city owned lot at the end of Clark
Street, or from Seaview Campground on Norwood Road.?
