I am searching for a list of songs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's that
would be good for Sing-along type entertainment at a party. (Ex. New
York New York, American Pie, and Hotel California) I am just looking
for a list. I don't want to buy a Karaoke machine or purchase a CD. I
just want a list of songs that people in their 30's and 40's like to
sing along to at a party. Someone must have put together a list
somewhere. Can't get through all the Ads. Thanks in advance. Rob

This might be a bit too old for your group, but if they're kind of
hippies, Peter, Paul, and Mary songs are generally good, esp.
Puff the magic dragon
Where have all the flowers gone
Blowin' in the wind
Good night Irene
Turn, turn, turn (I think that one is Pete Seeger)

More mainstream:
Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond) (Actually a number of Neil Diamond songs
are very singable.)
For the longest time (Billy Joel) (also other Billy Joel songs,
including "Tell her about it" and "We didn't start the fire" if people
happen to know it)
"Why do you build me up" (no idea what artist)
"Going to the chapel"
California Dreaming (Mamas and the Papas?)
Sound of silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
Another brick in the wall II (aka "We don't need no education") (Pink Floyd)
Comfortably numb (Pink Floyd)
Pretty woman (Roy Orbeson)
Yellow polka-dot bikini
Doo wah ditty ditty dum ditty doo (aka "There she was just a walkin'
down the street")
In the jungle (aka "A weema wep") (The Weavers?)

This is a free comment based on what I've seen people sing along with.
A real researcher can give you a better list. (I know most of these
are pretty old, but many of my peers seem to know them, and I'm only
27.)

Just remembering some of the songs at recent parties that made even
the recalcitrants burst into song and gave the really enthusiastic
ones some Big Diva opportunities...

Anything by ABBA (Mamma Mia, Money Money Money, Winner Takes It All,
Dancing Queen etc)
"I will survive" ~ Gloria Gaynor
"Cabaret" ~ Liza Minnelli
Anything from Sound of Music (so daggy it's now *almost* cool)
"YMCA" ~ Village People
"Nothing compares to you" ~ Sinead O'Connor
"What's going on?" ~ 4 non-blondes
"Little Red Corvette" ~ Prince (???)
"House of the Rising Sun" ~ The Animals (btw, did you know that
Australia's national anthem can be sung to the tune of House of the
Rising Sun? Bet you didn't.)

I just did a search and found this site
http://www.jukebox45s.co.uk/list-of-cds-jukebox-hire.htm
which has lots of good party songs listed. I've been humming along
happily. Maybe you and your guests will too.

Whoa, hang on. There's this one...

Big list. Hand me that microphone.

Thought of a couple more...

The Gambler (Kenny Rogers)
The Joker (Steve Miller?)
Still the one (Shania Twain)
Love the way you love me (Faith Hill)

Schoolhouse Rock should be familiar to your age group. They Might Be
Giants (an alternative group) is probably not, but they're very
singable.
