Doh, I should have been more articulate than to just say "website
work". I'm specifically looking for places (the less mainstream the
better) where I can find complete contract/freelance gigs. People
saying things along the lines of "I need a website for my small
business", or "My website needs a facelift", etc.

ContractedWork.com and Sologig.com look to be right along the lines.
Are there more like these?

Freelance work can also be found at www.globalpatron.com
There is escrow accounts, contract agreement, payment milestones,
transaction statements, payment by direct deposit. One of the unique
benefits of this site is that the head of dispute resolution is an IT
professional who is a justice of the peace and for particular projects
they give commissions to developers if they re-sell your work. I know
quite a lot about this site because I'm actually part owner, Cheerio !
