I've heard a few negotiating tips in passing, and have found them
tremendously useful. My favorite is "Always get the other guy to state
the first number". This holds true, I can't count the number of times
someone has given me a number that was way better than what I would
have expected.

What are some other one-line fundamentals/tips to negotiating?

Have an alternative plan that doesn't involve cooperating with the other guy.

If pressed for a decision say you have to consult your boss.

Switch the discussion between different topics of interest.

Try to know your opponent's time table. That is when does he have to
complete negotiation. That way you will know when he has given you
his true best offer.

Those are great!

These two make sense:
"If pressed for a decision say you have to consult your boss."
"Try to know your opponent's time table."

bozo99, what are the benefits to following these tips? Could you elaborate?
"Have an alternative plan that doesn't involve cooperating with the other guy."
"Switch the discussion between different topics of interest."

Sometimes the mere act of negotiating can be an object in itself
without advantage to either party other than maintaining the present
status quo.
Such cases would be acts of ?line drawing? where one party effectively
says ?So far and no further, what you are doing now is acceptable but
be careful because I?m not here to be taken advantage of, so explain
yourself and what you are up to and lets make sure you don?t go too
far?. In other words, let?s decide the line is where it is now.

Gee, and I thought the most fundamental rule of negotiating is to know
your own limits, and then what your wiggle room is on that. Everything
else is good advice, but knowing in advance your own limits of what
you can give (authority AND quantity) and what you will accept in the
process is essentially the whole point, isn't it? (And, of course,
these limits are not to be divulged to the other party.)

I like getting the other number first. I would admit that pulling "I
have to talk with my boss about it" is rather lame unless that is
established somehow upfront.

Know your perceived value of the result. It doesn't matter that it may
be more costly than others can provide it. If it's what you are
willing to give/do for it, within your limits, you've accomplished
your goal.

> "Have an alternative plan that doesn't involve cooperating with the other guy."

e.g. in seeking a pay rise in my current job my alternative plans
involve job applications at other places.

> "Switch the discussion between different topics of interest."

Often there's more than one thing being discussed: e.g. the price to
pay for a house, what furniture is included and the completion date.
Rather than let discusion get too heated on one point move onto
another.

Salesmen know the importance of the "consult your boss" idea and
usually insist on visiting when both husband and wife are present.
You can deny them this.
