My Mother-In-Law wants to take my 4 year old Daughter from England to
France with her next weekend. My daughter has frequently travelled
abroad with my Husband and I from the age of 4 months with her own
passport. Does my Mother-In-Law need written permission from us to
leave the country with our Daughter?

Dear mummyd-ga,
I have looked at the web site for the French Consulate in London.

They first of all they confirm that for UK citizens,
?You are exempt from obtaining a visa to enter the Schengen Space.
As a citizen of the European Union, you benefit from freedom of
movement within the European space. Only documents required to travel
are a valid passport or a national I.D. card.?

However, for your situation I have found a Parental Authorisation to
travel form which requires to be completed.
?Children, under the age of 18, travelling to and staying in France
without their parents, must produce a letter from their legal
guardians authorizing them to do so.?
The form is on this link.

In any event your carrier may require proof. For instance, Brittany
Ferries note that
?Any child going abroad without a parent or legal guardian must have a
letter of consent otherwise permission to travel may be refused.?
http://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/index.cfm?articleid=538&articleaction=print

You can always check with your carrier.

I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is
unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before
rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as
soon as I receive it.
Thank you
