Hello xlr8s1v1ce:

Thanks for the interesting question. The plant that you saw on 60
minutes is called "Hoodia gordonii", or often just "hoodia".

African Plant May Help Fight Fat
URL: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/18/60minutes/main656458.shtml
Quote: "Now along comes hoodia. Never heard of it? Soon it'll be
tripping off your tongue, because hoodia is a natural substance that
literally takes your appetite away."

The following University of Texas website lists some information about
this plant and its uses:

Herb Fact Sheet - Hoodia
URL: http://www.herbalsafety.utep.edu/facts.asp?ID=45
Quote: "As an appetite and thirst suppressant. Native South Africans,
notably the Khoi-San herders, have used this plant for centuries in
order to endure extended periods of time without food or water. This
quality may render this plant useful as a treatment for obesity, but
more controlled research in humans is needed....There are currently no
known side effects with the proper use of this plant as a weight
control supplement; however, there are only limited data pertaining to
humans, so much more clinical research is needed in order to conclude
if it is safe for long term use."

As for the commercial you say you heard on Springer - it was likely
for a product called "JEC Nutrition H57 Hoodia". This product can be
purchased at:

A1Nutrition Products
URL: http://www.a1nutritionproducts.com/buy/jec_nutrition/h57_hoodia
Cost: 60 capsules @ $39.99

There are many other brands of hoodia supplements, but this is the
only one with "H57" in the name that I can find.

Search Strategy (on Google):
* african plant suppress hunger
* "Hoodia Gordonii" stahl
* "Hoodia Gordonii"
* "Hoodia Gordonii" site:.edu
* H57 hoodia

I hope this helps!
