I'm asking this because I'm going to university soon, and I want to
decide now what I want to have as a career. I'm interested in
technology (software engineering, mostly) and business (I want to run
my own business one day.)

I definitely would like to attend a Bay area college, preferabbly
something like Stanford University (yes, I know it is a very difficult
school to get in to, and it has a rigorous schedule as well.)

So, which would be the best choice to take?

Please give some statistics, research links and articles, etc.!

Thanks. It looks like that list is pretty general, though. It
practically lists a career path in every single field.

Actor? Lawyer? Chriopractor? So, it's as if they are all in the same
area of demand, anyways, which makes it a bit confusing. But anyways,
thanks for the link! I'll definitely still make good use of it!

I used to work for an employment agency. I advise against choosing a
career because there are likely to be many openings in a certain
field. Obviously you don't want to plan for a career in an area that
is totally obsolete, but planning your future with an eye on
statistics can lead to dissatisfaction and job burnout if you choose a
field to which you are not well suited.

Many years ago, a friend of mine decided to major in engineering,
since he knew that there was a demand for engineers. He hated the math
and was absolutely miserable in engineering classes. Finally he
changed his major to something that appealed to him, a field of study
that used his native abilities well. He ended up with a degree in city
planning. He had no difficulty getting a job, and he now has a career
that interests him and provides challenges rather than frustrations.

I completely agree with Pink. Spend some time thinking about what
you're really passionate about and go for that or some field where you
can make use of that. If you're passionate about something, you'll be
better at it. If you're really good at something, then even if there
are few jobs, you'll be more likely to get one. It's also impossible
to predict what will be hot when you get out, particularly if you have
to first do grad school, etc. If you're real motivation is only to
get a job when you get out, then getting in to a place like Stanford
(or anywhere on the west coast) will be difficult at best. They're
pretty good at sniffing out people's motivations. They look for
people who really want to do something.

Software engineering is a great field to pursue, if that's where
you're interests lie. The field will only grow - Society isn't
returning to the land of the Ludite anytime soon. With any major
field, you can minor in something else, or even double major. If
you're sincerely interested in business, you could either do an MBA
later or study business while you're an undergrad. If you don't like
it, nothing lost - that's one reason colleges let you take electives -
to explore things without a huge risk.

I'd also look at UCSF if you're from California - they have many
excellent programs and are probably the best public college in the
country.

Best of luck,

Jobs Rated Almanac:
http://www.egguevara.com/shopping/articles/jobsrated.html

This shows the top 250 jobs in the US. I remember reading once what
they based the ratings on, I know it included:
current and expected demand
entry level pay
average pay
average hours worked
and some other things... I really wish I could remember or find the info, but alas.

I hope that helps.

I'm also a big promoter of finding a job you enjoy or atleast are
naturally good at. Struggling through college and a career in a field
you don't enjoy and aren't so good at will be a life of misery no
matter how much you are in demand.
