Dear guitarhawk-ga,
According to his detailed obituary in The Times newspaper (UK), he did not.
[Extract]
The Times, Saturday, Jul 24, 1875; pg. 12;
Born 1st January 1793. Educated at the academy at Woolwich. And
obtained his first commission with the Royal Engineers in 1811. He saw
some active service in Spain, and was present at Quatre Bras and
Waterloo.
In the UK you can access the Times through a good local library. In
the US/Canada I would imagine it can be found in a university library
or central library.
The information is corroborated here,
?He was educated at Rochester grammar school and the Royal Military
Academy, whence in 1811 he was commissioned to the Royal Engineers. He
was for some years stationed in the Mediterranean, and he served in
the campaign of 1815, being present at the battle of Waterloo.?
